In the early days of computer aided calculations of structures the finite elements used for the analysis were at the centre of attention. The users had to be experts in the finite element method in order to perform accurate calculations. Generation of the finite element mesh was either a completely manual process or, at best, a semiautomatic procedure that required intensive cooperation on the side of the user.

BIM-workflowAt the last PCI Annual Convention Nemetschek Vectorworks, Nemetschek Scia, StructureWorks, and Tekla teamed up to demonstrate a new integrated model based workflow for the precast industry streamlining the design and production of precast structures.

Today, AECBytes publishes a new progress report on “Industry-Wide National BIM Standard” going into detail on the potential of “openBIM”.

The demonstration shows a sequence of exchanges over a large portion of the precast concrete workflow. While the complexity of the elements was not great, the demonstration showed the benefits that precast concrete software companies can provide to support smooth and effective workflows. It also showed by example how exchange interfaces can support on-the-fly adjustment of exchanges regarding types of geometry, what level of detail to include, and which properties.

An advantage of supporting a set of exchanges is that combinations of exchange components with different functionality are implemented together and can be controlled by the user. Other industry-wide exchanges are now in development, including efforts led by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

The Revit-Scia Interface unlocks the full benefits of BIM by providing a bi-directional link from Revit Structure to Nemetschek Scia’s analysis and design solution, Scia Engineer.

What can you import / export?

  • Interoperability-Workflow-Scia-Revit-LinkAll types of geometry can be imported and exported from Revit Structure to Scia Engineer including curved walls and slabs, openings and notches in steel beams and holes in slabs
  • Supports can be exported from Revit to Scia Engineer or added to an imported Revit model in Scia Engineer, then when linked back, updated in Revit
  • Loads and combinations can also can be entered and sent from Revit to Scia or added to the Scia Engineer model and linked back to Revit
  • All materials are supported in the link, concrete, steel, composite, timber etc.

How do you export from Revit to Scia Engineer?

  • Link directly from Revit to Scia if both products are on the same computer. The link will automatically open Scia Engineer whereupon the Revit model will appear
  • Models can be exchanged as a whole or users can select parts of the model to be exported in phases to gradually build the model as required within Scia Engineer
  • If the products are on different computers the link provides the option to save the model data to a file which can then be sent to another computer or office for import into Scia Engineer
  • Changes can be highlighted in Revit after importing back from Scia Engineer to allow monitoring of member size, material or geometric alterations
  • In Scia Engineer changes can also be highlighted, accepted or deleted when updating from Revit
Advantages
  • Bi-directional link to Revit Structure
  • Improve accuracy, cut production time and reduce errors
  • Link models of all material and construction types from design to drawing production in Revit Structure
  • Design link to Scia Engineer, the complete analysis and design solution
  • Link models started in Scia Engineer to Revit Structure or vice versa
  • Professional support and training available
  • Low fee projects can now be made profitable!

On the 13th of December 2011 a Revit Structures Interface event will be held in Herk-de-Stad (Belgium). Mr. Keith Evans from CADS (UK) will be presenting Scia customers on how to use the link. More info will follow soon on this blog.

Scia Engineer Optimizer is intended for structural engineers, investors, contractors, steel fabricators, prefab producers, … for all those who want to decrease their costs through the optimization of structures. What is common nowadays is the optimization of the dimensions of individual structure parts, but it generally represents a manual iterative process. Scia Engineer Optimizer automates the optimization process and allows for greater variability of the parameters that affect the costs.

Curious? Click here to register for the free webinar about Scia Engineer Optimizer which takes place on Tuesday, December 6, 2011.

What is the content of this webinar?

  • Introduction to the optimization of civil engineering structures
  • Description of the optimization process with Scia Engineer Optimizer
  • Practical optimization examples

Scia Engineer Optimizer is currently the only optimization tool on the market that is based on a standard CAE system (Scia Engineer) and providing for a general optimization of structures resulting in savings in material, energy, labour and other costs through parametric optimization procedure that utilizes the cutting edge mathematical methods to search for the optimal dimensions, boundary conditions or topology of the structure.

Practical details:

  • Date: Tuesday, December 6, 2011
  • Time: 11:00 AM (CET)
  • Duration: (max) 1 hour
  • Webinar: Netviewer (link will be sent after registration)

  • Are you a BIM modelling professional who needs wide interoperability capabilities?
  • Do you call for advanced tools for an easy and automated preparation of drawings?
  • Are you a specialist who designs civil engineering structures without going into the calculation and code-design phase?
  • Do you long for functions that make it possible for a whole team to work simultaneously on the same model?

If you answered “yes” to at least one of the questions, then Scia Engineer Structural Edition is the right choice for you.

Report on Scia Engineer seminar in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia)

by Francis Vanderbruggen on 8 November 2011

in Events

A seminar introducing Scia Engineer was held at our Saudi partner, Maak’s, facilities last October.

The seminar focused on how Scia Engineer enables engineers to save time, money and go beyond analysis and design of structures and really explore the structure. The seminar was well received with attendees from well known companies such as Al Shahin, IBSF and STC.
